Cancer diagnostic van helping in early detection in rural areas
Nagpur: The cancer diagnostic van initiative launched by city’s Rashtra Sent Tukadoji Cancer Centre is helping in early detection of the dreaded disease in rural and remote areas of Nagpur division. After a break of nearly two years due to Covid pandemic, the cancer diagnostic van is again screening people from villages.
Since December 1,the van has been travelling in tribal and remote villages of Gondia district. About 400 people-from Gothangaon, Rawanwadi, Chopa, Dawwa, Goregaon, Khodshivani and surrounding villages-having health issues were screened for different types of cancers. Of them 23 were either diagnosed with cancer or referred for the advanced diagnostics tests at RST hospital.
Distrit health officer of Gondia Dr Nitin Wankhede said that the screening was conducted for free with the help of RST Hospital and India Cancer Society. “Most of the suspects showed signs of oral cancer. Many of them could not open their mouths fully. Tobacco addiction in men and health neglect among women are major causes of concerns,” said Dr Wankhede.
Civil Surgeon Dr Ambrish Mohabe said that suspects will get treatment at RST Cancer Hospital.”The van reached right at the doorsteps of the patients, especially women who would have never gone for a test,” he said. The camps held in Dawwa, Goregaon found suspected cases of breast cancer, cervix cancer too.
Dr BK Sharma of RST Cancer hospital said that they plan to conduct 100 camps in remote regions of Vidarbha. “More than 80 camps have already been conducted. The van has many advanced facilities including on-the-spot lab testing. This helps in many cancer cases getting diagnosed at an early stage. Early diagnosis is the key to treat cancer,” he said.
The van has A team of a gynaecologist, ENT specialist, dental surgeon, medical officer and nursing staff. Laboratory tests related to cancer are also conducted. Poor and needy patients get all support from the RST hospirtal for future treatement.
Dr Sharma said that apart from government authorities, NGOs, clubs and private institutions and organizations can hire the van. The hospital charges only for fuel and dignostic expenses.
